Hard Worker, Not promoted.
Figure 1: At Last (Source:
Last year in an international limited over cricket
match, I saw a batter who came down the order blasting a few quick runs, got the man of
match award, although there was an opener who got 50 odd hard laboring runs. I
wonder how the winners' few runs were more effective than hard-working openers
half-century and how his effort did not get rewarded. But later understood that a performance with the passion to win was more likely to be praised.
When I got to the office, same found, as some employees
who work with passion and dedication got promoted last month ahead of hard-working
coworkers. Is it the same everywhere?
We can find quite a different kinds of employee approaches for their work,
01. Employees, who don’t want to work
02. Employees, who work, because they have to
03. Employees, who work hard without considering the
outcome of their effort
04. Employees, who work hard with passion to generate
plus results for the organization
In the above 03 and 04 instances, employees are
working hard for their organization but only at number 04 more effective and
get to be notified most by the employer as it is generating plus results.

ReplyDeleteIn a country like Sri Lanka, we need to find a way to give extra pay or other extra benefits to those who work hard. Wage inequality is low in developed countries, but not in Sri Lanka. On the other hand, the amount of risk we take determines the salary we pay. For example, the salary we pay to a surgeon and the salary we pay to a woman who builds the main road is a huge difference. In this article, you have tried to come up with some good ideas. Thank you.
DeletePunctuality, failure to complete assigned work, and unprofessional behavior were once common reasons for dismissing an employee. Working during lunchtime, however, can now be added to the list of reasons why hard workers believe they are being competent. Even when seeking a promotion, those who demonstrate high performance are promoted, but not overachievers.
ReplyDeleteHard working and smart working is two different. Sometimes hard work can be no result. Most of times promotions are giving for the skills and responsibility.
